The Appeal of the Warhammer 40K Universe →
I’ve spent quite a lot of time in the Universe of Warhammer 40K, and it’s not a terribly pleasant place to live. War, disease, anarchy, death, mutation, demonic corruption, nihilism, cultural collapse, and the slow stagnation of human civilisation: these are just some of the aspects of everyday life here in the UK that I am reminded of when I visit the Imperium. Various Black...

An amazing chat between Shigeru Miyamoto (inventor of Mario / Zelda / nearly every good Nintendo game) and Shigesato Itoi (inventor of Earthbound, and a few others) Even though I feel the current Nintendo aren’t really putting out anything that interests me, it is a fascinating insight into the mind of a man that I very much respect, creatively. He goes into a lot of detail not about...

Konami Code? In my website? It’s more likely than you think. (via the good Mr RDK, who’s also a pretty decent Warthog gunner)

Air Display « Avatron Software →
An app that lets you use your iPad as a second display. Seems to work really nicely - it’s not full speed or perfect quality, but I’m using it to display a couple of Terminal processes I’m running and it’s certainly good enough for that.

Makes perfect sense. No wait, hang on. No it doesn’t. It doesn’t make any sense at all. It sort of confirms my theory that Sega spend all the money they make selling poor-quality Sonic games on low-grade crack.

God Emperor of Dune
Whenever I’m asked what my favourite book is, I usually say 1984, or Dorian Gray. In nerdier company I admit it might be Eisenhorn or the original Rogue Trader rulebook. And yes, those are all definitely the rest of my top 5. But truthfully, my absolute favourite has to be God Emperor of Dune by Frank Herbert. Never before (and possibly never since) has an author created such a consistent,...

This guy is so full of shit that when he cuts himself he reaches for the Andrex. Yeah, there are “sadistic dolts” in IT. But let’s be frank about it - would you rather see a few whiny stories from people that have had their (unauthorised) devices wiped because they were using services not authorised and blessed by their IT departments (it’s a single email in most cases)?...

ZumoCast →
ZumoCast is an amazing new app for streaming media and documents to your iPhone or iPad. I haven’t played with it a huge amount, but from what I’ve seen it should more or less completely replace Air Video, and with a bit of work give me full access to all of my music / films / comics from anywhere on the planet. Which you have to admit is a massively cool idea.

Phone Phreaking in 1971
This was posted on Kottke.org about a minute ago, but has since disappeared. I’m posting the whole text verbatim from the RSS feed: From the October 1971 issue of Esquire, Secrets of the Little Blue Box, an early mainstream piece on phone phreaking. Interestingly, a number of the early phone phreaks were blind kids, including Joe Engressia, who could whistle a perfect 2600 hertz tone. ...
